Capture Photography Festival Exhibitions

The Capture Photography Festival runs through the month of April in various galleries and spaces in Metro Vancouver. Launched in 2013, the annual event exhibits challenging and thought-provoking photography from local and international artists.

Four exhibitions celebrate the work of artists who contribute to the programs we offer at AFK.

Luke Potter

Luke Potter's exhibit Silence in Schools is in the Smith Gallery. "Silence in Schools is a photographic art project revealing the stillness and silence in an environment generally known to be colourful, bustling and clamorous," says Luke. "The images depict the physical effect teaching and learning can have on a classroom environment and just how these spaces and areas within a school feel once devoid of pupils, teachers, activity and sound. This is an ongoing project." The exhibition is in the Mezzanine Gallery and runs through April 12, 2017.

Victor John Penner

Vic Penner's exhibit District is at the West Vancouver Museum through May 6, 2017. His large-format photographs capture images of West Vancouver, from stairs in a parking lot to empty spaces and a treed lane. The works invite the viewer to consider how culture is built through experience, events and myths. The West Vancouver Museum is at 680 17th Street. West Vancouver. Vic will be giving an artist talk on Sat April 15, 2017 at 2:00 pm. The North Shore News covered the opening. View their images here.

Gordon Smith

Our founding patron, Gordon Smith has an exhibition of photographs at the Equinox Gallery. Inspired by visual elements in his studio, Smith has taken photographic imagery and reworked the surface using acrylic paint and collaged elements. These painted gestures generate a host of meaningful associations between the lyricism of abstraction and the reality of representation. The Equinox Gallery is at 525 Great Northern Way in Vancouver. The opening reception is on Saturday, April 08, 2017 at 2:00 pm.

Emily Neufeld

Emily Neufeld, the Studio Technician with AFK, has her work Picture Window on display on The Wall, on the CBC Building, 700 Hamilton Street in Vancouver. The photographs capture a home before being demolished, and explore how where we live becomes a repository for memories.

We encourage you to visit one or more of the exhibitions and support local artists in the Vancouver area.
